Information about Zurich (Switzerland)

Zurich is the largest city in Switzerland and according to several surveys in 2006 and 2007, Zürich was named the city with the "best quality of life" in the world. Boring banking capital is what Zurich is reputed to be, however it's surprisingly hip and trendy with lots of new bars and nightclubs opened up around the city. more>>
A day in Zurich
The best place to wake up in Switzerland's largest metropolis is somewhere you can see the ripples of lake and mountains the instant you open your eyes. Lakefront legend Baur au Lac is a serious contender, though Uto Kulm leaves me with more cash to spend in the city's fantastic shops. Fuelled with breakfast, it's time to meander medieval Zürich, not missing Marc Chagall's stained-glass in the Fraumünster and the southern tower at the Grossmünster. Lunch is a relaxed noon-to-two affair - al fresco weather permitting - at Kantorei after which I must just pop into Neumarkt 17 to check what its latest designs. I could spend all day wandering the bijou boutiques and galleries of these old-town back streets. But Swiss 20th-century art at the Kunsthaus (Museum of Fine Arts); beckons, followed by a cup of tea and stroll in Zürichhorn Park to see Le Corbusier's pavilion (I'm a big fan). Day by no means done, I head west next for some urban grit in industrial zone Züri-West: Zürich's Design Museum is a must, followed by an aperitif in one of the new bars off Langstrasse and dinner in a warehouse at La Salle or with a Bauhaus bride in Hotel Greulich.
