Perth is the capital of western Australia, by road it is over 4400km (2750miles) from Sydney. Perth is a beautiful relaxed, clean city that offers plenty of beaches that are perfect for surfing or just for chilling with friends; all you have to do is take a short taxi ride to either Cottesloe or Scarborough.

You will find plenty of cafes and restaurants to choose from, they offer fresh local delicious foods at very affordable prices and if you like sushi look out for 'Jaws' outlets in the city. If you do manage to get lost in this small city, then just ask one of the friendly locals for directions, you will find them very helpful.

Beaches - Cottesloe

Perth’s most fashionable beach is not far from the hotel about one or two stops or take a short taxi ride. Very popular beach with good bars on the beach (excellent for Sunday sundowner). Indianna Teahouse is a beautiful café, restaurants right on the beach (bit pricy) but has amazing view. Blue Duck is another café right on the beach with great view and is a bit more affordable. http://www.blueduck.com.au/

 

Scarborough http://www.scarboro.info/ Is the Biggest and most popular beach in Perth. Great for surfing however alittle bit further from hotel, catch a train to shirling or glendalaigh station then outside bus will take you straight there. There’s also a couple of bars and cafes. Villa Bianchi is a nice little café opposite the clock tower. Scarborough is much more happening at weekends, also there is a surf school if you want to learn to surf.

 

Fremantle is 19km (12 miles) from downtown Perth. Freo” is a bustling district full of alfresco cafes, museums, galleries, pubs, markets, and shops in a well-preserved historical atmosphere. One of the many highlights is the Fremantle Prison This limestone jail, was a maximum-security prison until 1991 and is four times as big as Alcatraz. Take the 75-minute tour, or guide yourself with an audio headset.

AQWA (Aquarium of Western Australia) Features Australia's largest aquarium and underwater tunnel; beautiful living coral reefs; the world's largest collection of Western Australian marine life; giant sharks, rays and turtles. Take a walk through an underwater tunnel of sharks, rays, turtles, and fish. Keepers feed the sharks and the touch-pool creatures daily, and a program of talks and movies on marine creatures is scheduled throughout the day.

Daily 10am–5pm; Wed (Dec–Apr) 10am–9pm. Closed Christmas. Train and bus: Take Joondalup train line to Warwick, transfer to bus 423. By car, take Mitchell Fwy. 23km (14 miles) north, turn left into Hepburn Ave. and carry on to roundabout at entrance to Hillarys Boat Harbour; AQWA is at the western end of the harbour. Free parking.

Art Gallery of Western Australia Most outstanding among this state gallery’s international and Australian works is the Aboriginal art collection, regarded as the finest in Australia. Free 1-hour tours of a particular collection run once or twice a day.

Kings Park & Botanic Garden Smack against the city center. Perfect places to take a stroll and inspect weird and wonderful Western Australian flora. Also you can bike ( rentals behind the Visitor Information Centre), hike, or drive an extensive network of roads and trails. There are barbecue and picnic facilities, so get out of the crew hotel with your colleagues and enjoy this wonderful park.

Perth Zoo This is a good place to see kangaroos, koalas, numbats, wombats, quokkas, emus, echidnas (the Aussie answer to the porcupine), dingoes, snakes, frogs, and just about every other kind of Aussie wildlife, mostly housed in natural habitats, or in a walk-through aviary. There are plenty of exotic animals, too, including orangutans, Rothschild’s giraffes, zebras, lions, rhinos, and elephants.

Swan Valley Twenty minutes from the city center is the home of two of Australia’s best wine labels, Sandalford Caversham Estate and Houghton Wines. In all there are 30 or so wineries along with wildlife parks, antiques shops, a few arts and craft galleries, several good restaurants, and Australia’s best golf resort. Some restaurants and wineries close Monday and Tuesday.

 

 

Rottnest Island A delightful wildlife reserve just off the Perth coast. Many sheltered beaches harbor coral reefs and 360 kinds of fish that make for fabulous snorkeling. You may spot humpback whales from September to December, and dolphins surfing the waves anytime. The island is11km (7 miles) long and 4.5km (3 miles) across at its widest point.

 

Boat Torque Cruises (& 08/9221 5888) and Oceanic Cruises (&08/9325 1191) operate services at least three times a day from Perth (trip time: about 1 hr. 45 min.),



 

The shoppers will find many boutiques, where you can find individual one offs and also the latest fashions. There are lots to explore from the botanical gardens of Kings Park or the trendy bars and cafes in Subiaco to the weekend markets in Fremantle. Best way to explore is to hire a car, it's cheap and also easy to find your way around.

 

Traveling around the city is free if you catch the grey cat bus. Always remember to wear a good sunscreen during summer cause the sun is extremely strong. Nights can be a little cool but not cold so pack a light jacket. It won’t snow in winter but will rain a lot.

 

If you like to buy wines look out for anything from Margaret River they are the best and buy them from the bottle shops in the city you will find a larger choice and better prices than in duty free..

 

Shopping hours in Perth are from 8am to 6pm Monday to Friday, except for Thursday when shops are open until 9pm. Shops are also open from 8am to 5.30pm on Saturday.

Some areas such as Perth City and Fremantle also have special trading hours and many shops and businesses will be open on Sunday in these areas.

 

Visitors to Perth and Fremantle will find an interesting array of shopping available. London Court, situated in the in Central Perth is a great place to source that perfect souvenir, with its great selection of souvenirs, exclusive and independent shops set within a unique old world backdrop making shopping here both unique and pleasurable.

 

Hay and Murray Street Malls, both being traffic-free areas make for comfortable shopping. Familiar department stores and franchise outlets together with specialty stores are present. The many arcades contain a wide range of shops including fine jewellery and fashion.

Perth’s range of eating-places is outstanding. Italian, Vietnamese, Indian, Chinese, Thai, Nepalese,

Japanese, Turkish, Korean, Greek and Ethiopian restaurants, can be found scattered all around the city. Many are situated around Murray and Milligan Streets, however, you will also find a wide range of variety in the food halls in the Hay Street Mall.

 

Northbridge also offers a full range of restaurants at varying prices, based mainly around Lake, Newcastle, Roe and William Streets. However keep away during the night or stay in large groups as its a high crime rate area. If you prefer the cosmopolitan cafe scene head for Oxford Street in Leederville.

 

Subiaco is also a great place to eat out, based mainly around Rokeby Road. This area is the place to go on Wednesdays - Sunday nights. Have dinner at 'Funtastico' bookings essential you will be able to enjoy everything from woodfired pizza to the freshest seafood. Then head a few doors down to the 'Lama Bar' and checkout the talent. (You need to dress to impress to get in).

 

20 minute taxi ride from Perth's city centre, is Fremantle also known by the locals as 'Freo'. This area is a vibrant port city you just can't miss. Everyone will love the multi-cultural charm with its choice of shops and the bustling Fremantle Markets (open Fridays - Sundays only). You can chill out along the cappuccino strip which is full of coffee shops and soak up the energy.

 

Mount Lawley is the area for lazy Sunday afternoons, do like the locals and head to a Sunday session at the pub - there's usually live music and delicious pub grub.

 

Highly recommended is Queens and The Brisbane. Freshly prepared meals from the best possible local ingredients is the predominant theme in the Perth food scene, influenced by the outstanding range of local produce.

 

 

Scoop, available at bigger newsagents, is a good source of information on festivals and concerts, performing arts, classical music, exhibitions, and more. Your best guide to dance clubs, rock concerts, gig listings, art-house cinemas, theater and art galleries is the free weekly X-press magazine available at pubs, cafes, and music venues every Thursday. Northbridge houses most of city’s lively pubs and
dance clubs.
