New York, New York. The Big Apple. The City that Never Sleeps. The biggest urban cliché magnet on the planet. Is it true, well its really for you to explore what this great city has to offer. Lots of tourist attractions plenty of bus tours around the city, one of the best is 'The Sex In The City'. Follow in the footsteps of Carrie & Co. as they conquer New York City! Drink where they drink, shop where they shop, and gossip where they gossip.

The Times Square Visitors Center, 1560 Broadway, between 46th and 47th streets (where Broadway meets Seventh Ave.), across from the TKTS booth on the east side of the street (& 212/768-1560; www.timessquarebid.org), is the city’s top info stop.

The city is truly massive and you really need a good guide book or better still yours and others sharing ideas and suggestions. Click on the trip planner to find the quickest way anyway in New York.

Subway. The much-maligned subway system is actually the fastest way to travel around New York, especially during rush hours. The subway runs 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Purchase a the magnetically encoded MetroCard, then swipe through the turnstile. Once you’re in the system, you can transfer freely to any subway line that you can reach without exiting your station. If your journey involves many stops, then buy the daily Fun Pass thus will save you money and time approx $7.

Shopping is a favorite pastime of New Yorkers. To many visitors its like another form of sightseeing, in one of the world’s biggest, most seductive bazaars. The city has 10,000 shops and boutiques, including huge national chains, none bigger than the self-proclaimed world’s biggest department store Macys on 34th street. Madison Avenue from 57th to 79th streets boasts the most expensive retail real estate in the world. Be warned you will need more than your stopover money when walking down Fifth Avenue. Here you will be able to shop at the most luxurious designer boutiques, Tiffany & Co, Chanel, Gucci, Prada and many. You’ll also find big-name jewelers along here, as well as chichi department stores like Bergdorf Goodman and Saks Fifth Avenue, all of which help the avenue maintain its classy cachet.

If you have a layover trip on Saturdays and Sundays then head for the flea markets that offer good buys. New York’s favorite is the Annex Antiques Fair & Flea Market, which takes over empty parking lots in Chelsea along Sixth Avenue between 24th and 27th streets. About 425 vendors peddle costume jewelry, vintage clothes, old furniture, and an assortment of other oddities and treasures.

Retail stores and specialty shops: Are open Monday to Friday 10am - 6pm (Thursday to 9pm), Saturday 10am - 6pm, Sunday noon - 6pm. Small, neighborhood convenience stores often stay open past 10pm. Boutiques may only be open a few days a week or have special hours.

Apple store that never closes, located on 5th Avenue (between 57th and 58th street). Open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

Sephora: One of the best places for makeup, skincare and bath & body products click for more

Century 21: Prices here on designer goods are 40% to 70% off what you would pay at a department store or designer boutique. (Between Broadway and Church St) http://www.c21stores.com/

Woodbury Common: One hour north of the city, the Colonial-style “village” boasts 220 stores and the world’s highest concentration of marquee labels (MaxMara, Christian Dior, Kate Spade, Dolce & Gabbana, Versace, Chanel, Fendi, Gucci), all in one parking lot.

Many pharmacy/drugstore chains are open 24 hours a day.

Brooklyn Bridge. You must take a walk across the bridge it is one of my all-time favorite New York activities. A wide wood-plank pedestrian walkway is elevated above the traffic, giving you a great view of the New York skyline. It’s a 20- to 40-minute stroll over the bridge to Manhattan, depending on your pace, the amount of foot traffic, and the number of stops you make to behold the stunning views. The footpath will deposit you right at City Hall Park.

Subway: A, C to High St.; 4, 5, 6 to Brooklyn Bridge–City Hall.

Ellis Island Roughly 40% of Americans can trace their heritage back to an ancestor who came through here. For the 62 years when it was America’s main entry point for immigrants (1892–1954), Ellis Island processed some 12 million people.

Ferries run daily to Ellis Island and Liberty Island from Battery Park and Liberty State Park, Daily 9:30am–5:15pm (last ferry departs around 3:30pm).

Statue of Liberty For the millions who first came by ship to America between 1892 and 1954 the first glimpse of the land of hope was Lady Liberty. Try to go early on a weekday to avoid the crowds that swarm in the afternoon, on weekends, and on holidays. A stop at Ellis Island is included in the price.

Daily 9am–5pm (last ferry departs around 4pm); extended hours in summer. Subway: 4, 5 to Bowling Green; 1, 9 to South Ferry.

Empire State Building The island’s tallest building. The Empire State Building has remained one of the city’s favorite landmarks, and its signature high-rise. Completed in 1931, the limestone-and-stainless steel streamline deco dazzler climbs 102 stories (1,454 ft.). The views from the 86th- and 102nd-floor observatories are breathtaking.

Subway: B, D, F, N, R, V, Q, W to 34th St.

The Pond at Bryant Park. The Pond is the centerpiece of Bryant Park's winter season, which also includes the annual Holiday Shops at Bryant Park. The 170' x 100' rink features free admission ice skating, in addition to high quality rental skates, skating shows, special events and activities. Well worth a visit, drag your crew out and share your photos and experiences with us.

Central Park On just about any day, Central Park is crowded with New Yorkers and visitors alike. On nice days, especially weekend days, it’s the city’s party central. Food carts and vendors are set up at all of the park’s main gathering points, selling hot dogs, pretzels, and ice cream, so finding a bite to eat is never a problem.

Horse-Drawn Carriage rides. At the entrance to the park at 59th Street and Central Park South, you’ll see a line of forlom horse-drawn carriages waiting to take passengers for $50 dollars and more. In our opinion this is a waste of money and time. Better and cheaper is to rent a push bike and ride around the park enjoying the scenes.

Grand Central Terminal one of the most magnificent public spaces in the country. Even if you’re not catching one of the subway lines or Metro-North commuter trains that rumble through the bowels of this great place, come and visit.

Subway: S, 4, 5, 6, 7 to 42nd St./Grand Central.
